Follow along with this aerial yoga star pose guide to learn three pose variations in star, including how to achieve star pose, the related shoulder star inversion, and how to roll back out of the pose.
The aerial star pose, otherwise known as a butterfly, is a full-body pose that helps you build strength and muscle in your back, abdomen, legs, and ankles. In this star pose yoga tutorial, you can learn how to use a silk hammock and master the star and inverted star pose.
Whether you’re performing yoga in your home studio or an aerial yoga class, you may already know how to do various aerial yoga poses. If you want to learn different poses, such as the vampire pose, anti-gravity warrior pose, or inverted bow pose, check out our other free tutorials or online studio and improve your yoga practice. Aerial yoga is a great body workout that can help reduce body weight, build strength, increase flexibility, offer spinal decompression, and other health benefits.
There are many benefits to doing the star pose, including:
The traditional star pose involves extending your limbs outwards and creating a star-like shape. The inverted star pose is like a variation of the shoulder stand, where you hang upside down in a star-like pose. We only recommend doing the inverted star pose if you are comfortable with aerial yoga and have no history of neck or back injuries.
The star pose targets and engages the upper body, core muscles, and lower body, including the shoulders, abdominals, obliques, lower back, quads, and hip flexors.
We recommend practicing the star pose around two to three times a week to improve strength and flexibility. However, don’t over-practice! You must listen to your body and practice the pose based on your comfort level to avoid injury or strain.
